CPM meet focus on mid-term performance

Mid-term performance of the party remained the main focus on the first day of the two-day politburo meet of the CPI(M), which began on Saturday. After nearly six months, skipping several politburo meet, West Bengal chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee attended the meet.

The party general secretary, Mr Prakash Karat, who has got a new lease of life after the party congress was deferred to 2012 following elections in Bengal next year, spoke on the performance of the party. The scheduled date for the party congress was in February 2011.
The meeting deliberated on the draft of the party’s mid-term performance. The draft would have to be finally debated and decided upon during the extended party congress in August.
The meeting also assumed significance as after nearly six months there was a full representation from Bengal, which included the chief minister, state secretary Biman Bose and industry minister Nirupom Sen.
Fireworks are expected during Sunday’s deliberations as the party’s performance in the recently concluded Bengal civic polls is expected to be raised.
Mr Karat, who was being blamed for the CPI(M)’s plight for his “immature” political decision (snapping ties with the UPA), intends to shift the onus on to the “poor performance” of the Bengal administration, sources disclosed. Mr Bhattacharjee, who has not been in good terms with the party general secretary, had been skipping the meet for the past six months.
Sources disclosed that Mr Karat “is now desperately looking for a scapegoat to blame the party’s downslide”. Though questions were being raised about “his authority and capability” to lead the party, Mr Karat “desperately wants to continue in the top position and is lobbying hard to get the majority re-elect him during the 2012 party congress,” sources said.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
