CPM refuses to take stance on Mullaperiyar issue
The Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Tuesday refused to take a stand on constructing a new dam at Mullaperiyar despite the veteran Kerala leader, Mr V.S. Achuthanandan, criticising it for not reflecting the state’s concerns on the issue.
The party general secretary, Mr Prakash Karat, told mediapersons that the Centre should immediately intervene to resolve the dispute between Kerala and Tamil Nadu on the Mullaperiyar dam and hoped that the Supreme Court would expedite the judgment on the matter.
Mr Karat, however, refused to comment when asked if he supported the construction of a new dam at Mullaperiyar.
“The experts should say what measures have to be taken to ensure the safety of the dam and the people,” Mr. Karat said.
The party leader also said that Tamil Nadu should be assured of water and Kerala’s genuine concerns on the safety of Mullaperiyar dam should be taken care of.
Meanwhile, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders from Kerala demanded the party’s national leadership to take up the Mullaperiyar issue in the Parliament.
