CPM uses statistics to mask defeat
Despite facing major reverses in the local bodies’ polls, the CPI(M) state secretary, Mr Pinarayi Vijayan, reeled out statistics on Monday to prove that the left democratic front had in fact improved its position.
Talking to mediapersons here, Mr Vijayan said that the LDF had won 10,64,000 more votes when compared to the 2009 Lok Sabha polls when it had faced a severe drubbing.
“Our foundations are strong,” said Mr Vijayan. “In fact, we have become stronger when compared to 2009 though some parties left the front.”
Though this is the first time that the LDF has faced such a massive defeat in the local bodies polls including in its rural strongholds, the CPI(M) state secretary put on a brave face and said the results had boosted the self-confidence of the LDF.
“Of course, we didn’t get the victory we expected and we will take this into acc-ount,” he said. The CPI(M) leader made light of the Congress-led united democratic front’s victory and said that it was achieved through unholy alliances with religious fundamentalists of all kinds. “The UDF is willing to side with anyone for temporary benefits and this would harm the state in the long run,” he said. “It linked up with the BJP as well as the Popular Front of India.” Mr Vijayan also denied that the Christian community had shunned the CPI(M) and added that the results from coastal areas proved otherwise. He added that the party would stick to its principled stance that religion should not interfere in politics.
