CPWD internal panel to probe stadia construction

The CPWD has set up an internal committee, headed by the additional director general (CWG), to look into the arrangements and construction-related problems in the 10 stadia constructed, renovated or remodelled by the agency for the Commonwealth Games-2010. The move comes in the wake of reports of leakages at two stadia.

The eight-member committee will constitute a task force that would not only identify the problem areas but also ensure that rectification is carried out. The committee will also take a look at media reports pointing out problems in stadia and undertake corrective measures, if necessary. This will be done on a daily basis till the completion of the Games.
Talking to this newspaper, director general CPWD, B.K. Chugh, said that no major problems have been encountered in the stadia where the agency was involved. “The problem of leakages, as reported by the media at the weight-lifting auditorium in the Jawaharlal Nehru stadium complex and the cycling velodrome were due to minor glitches which have been sorted out,” said Mr Chugh, adding that the committee has nevertheless been asked to visit every stadia.
“Out of the 10 stadia we have taken up, problem has been reported only in two,” said Mr Chugh.
“The work as per our mandate has been completed at all the 10 stadia. Still, the works of agencies like TCIL, MTNL and Prasar Bharti remain. We will cooperate with them at the site, but that in no way means that our work is incomplete,” said Mr Chugh.
The 10 stadia, which the CPWD has completed for the CWG-2010, are: Jawaharlal Nehru main stadium, Lawn Bowl arena and weight-lifting auditorium (all Nehru stadium complex); gymnastics, cycling velodrome and wrestling (all Indira Gandhi Indoor complex); Shyama Prasad Mukherjee swimming pool complex; Major Dhyanchand national hockey stadium; Dr Karni Singh shooting range and Big Bore shooting range (Kadarpur, Gurgaon).

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
