Bengaluru: A 21-year-old youth was beaten up by a mob when they mistook him for sexually harassing a three-year-old girl at Kammasandra in Hebbagodi on the outskirts of the city. He was saved only after the girl’s father intervened.
Police said the youth has been identified as Sirajuddin, an apprentice to a carpenter in Kammasandra. On Sunday afternoon, Sirajuddin’s employer asked him to take his three-year-old daughter to a nearby shop and buy her chocolates.
Police said that when Sirajuddin and the carpenter's daughter were returning from the shop, she excused herself as she had to attend nature’s call. “Sirajuddin took her to the nearby bushes and was helping her. A few passersby saw this and were under the impression that he was trying to rape the girl. They caught hold of Sirajuddin and thrashed him before he could say anything. He also found it difficult to explain as he did not know the local language.”
“The mob tied him to a pole and informed the police. He was taken to police station and later, the girl's father came to the spot," the police explained. “The carpenter explained that Sirjauddin was his helper and he himself had sent his daughter along with him. The employer also told his daughter and Sirajuddin’s version to police and convinced them that his apprentice had not,in fact, harmed his daughter,” police said.
“Sirajuddin did not wish to file any complaint against those who assaulted him,” the police added.

Another jeweller ends life in city
Bengaluru: In the second such suicide the city has seen in two days, a 38-year-old debt-ridden jewellery maker hanged himself at his residence in 5th cross, Azabnagar in Chamrajpet police limits in the wee hours of Sunday.
The deceased has been identified as Shyamsundar Tantra, a native of Hooghly district in West Bengal. Police said Tantra shifted to the city from West Bengal twenty years ago and had opened a jewellery manufacturing unit in Cubbonpet.
Tantra married for thirteen years to Madhumati is survived by his wife and two sons — Saroj (12) and Sumit (2). Tantra, an employer of seven workers at his unit borrowed large sums of money over the years. A month ago, Tantra had reportedly confessed to his wife that he had been incurring heavy losses and was worried about repaying his debts.
Police said  Tantra’s financial stress  in the past few months had made him a heavy drinker and smoker. On Saturday, around 10.30 pm, he returned home in an inebriated state and refused to have his dinner. He later locked himself up inside the bedroom.
His wife, Madhumati told the police that she found nothing unusual about her husband’s behaviour, as it had become routine. She slept in the living room  with her two children, police said.
Around 7.30 am on Sunday, Madhumati tried waking up her husband, but to no avail. Finding the door locked from the inside, her eldest son Saroj reportedly climbed on to the ventilator shaft and entered the bedroom, only to find his father hanging from the ceiling fan.
Madhumati shouted for help, and her neighbours rushed to the scene and brought down the body, taking it to the nearest hospital, where  he was declared brought dead.
Police suspect that Tantra may have committed suicide in the wee hours of Sunday. No death note was found, but according to Madhumati’s statements to the police, he had accrued huge debts and was unable to pay them off. This may have provoked him to take the extreme step.
A case of unnatural death has been registered by the Chamrajpet police, who are investigating the case. It may be recalled that on Friday a jewellery shop owner, his wife, and their seven-year-old daughter ended their lives by consuming cyanide inside their car, after parking it near Chikkasanne Gate near Devanahalli.
The deceased were identified as Sandeep hailed from Chintamani in Kolar and had settled in Bengaluru. The exact reason for the suicide is not known, but police suspect that financial losses is perhaps the cause for their death.
