Crime file: Husband arrested for woman’s murder
Husband arrested for woman’s murder
Chennai: The police on Saturday arrested the husband of the woman who was murdered on Wednesday and his nephew. Kavitha Kumari, 37, a resident of Soolaima Nagar in Mettukuppam near Thoraipakkam was found dead, with her throat having been slit in broad daylight.
Investigations revealed that her husband, Veerappan, had plotted her murder as she was objecting to his extra-marital affairs. Police said that Veerapan had confessed to hiring his nephew, Arasu, 29, to kill her.
Veerapan runs a seafood stall in Teynampet market, where his nephew Arasu works. Arasu, a convict in a murder case in 2010, was in dire need of money to pay maintenance for his first wife, whom he had divorced, and Veerapan had promised to help him with Rs 30,000 in exchange for the hit, a release said.
“As there were no valuables stolen, we suspected a personal motive behind the murder and considering that the couple used to have frequent altercations over his affairs, the husband was suspected from the beginning,” a police officer said.
He said that on Wednesday, Veerapan had left the house to go to the fish market, as usual, and Kavitha Kumari was alone in the house.
“Arasu had casually come visiting and asked the victim to show him a family album. When she was entering the room, he strangled her and later slit her throat, using a kitchen knife.” The police have arrested Arasu and Veerapan and they have been remanded to judicial custody.

Minor abuse: Cops shut down NGO
Bengaluru: A day after two directors of an NGO and one of their ‘patients’ were arrested for sodomising a mentally ill 13-year-old boy, the Madanayakanahalli police have shut the NGO down and remanded the accused to judicial custody.
The NGO — Belaku Social Service Organisation — was reportedly started a while ago by a former alcoholic, Bharath (21), his friend, Sunil alias Shankar (29), and three others. Belaku was meant to be a de-addiction centre, the arrested duo told the police.
Chandru (29) was at the facility seeking treatment and acquainted himself with the directors. Bharath knew the victim’s mother, ‘Suma’ (name changed), when he was staying close to her house in Yeshwanthpur. Suma and her husband work at a private firm and have another son who is seven years old.
In May, Bharath approached Suma and told her that he could cure her son, who suffers from a psychological disorder, within three months. Suma sent the boy to the NGO in Devannapalya near Dasanapura, where he was supposed to be ‘treated’ for a monthly fee of Rs 10,000.
A senior police officer, who visited the NGO, told Deccan Chronicle that the non-governmental organisation was not equipped to call itself a de-addiction centre. “They do not have any permanent staff, the doctors are not properly trained and the facilities are terrible. We are questioning the social welfare department officials from whom the directors had allegedly taken a certificate of registration to start the NGO,” he said.
“More importantly, we are trying to ascertain exactly how much money they received from the government in the form of ‘grants’ to run the organisation,” he said.
There were 29 other patients at Belaku, all of whom adults, and recovering addicts. “The only minor was the 13-year-old mentally ill boy. Medical tests on the victim and the accused confirmed the boy’s statement that he was raped,” the officer said.
The three accused, Bharath, Sunil, and Chandru, have been booked on charges of rape and unnatural sex and sent to judicial custody. Sources said the accused regularly sodomised the 13-year-old and threatened him into silence. The incident came to light when the boy’s mother noticed some bruises on the boy’s thighs and legs when she paid him a visit at the NGO recently.
The police said the boy is recovering and that they have told the other ‘inmates’ of Belaku to return to their families.

Hyderabad: The fear of going behind the bars for drunken driving resulted in an accident on Friday night.
A techie, who was drunk, asked his untrained female friend to take the wheel when he saw a drunken driving enforcement check post, in Banjara Hills.
Instead of slowing down, she took off at full speed, hitting one person. The incident occurred around midnight when the duo in a four-wheeler saw a traffic police check post on Road No. 12 in Banjara Hills.
Raju had consumed alcohol, but for fear of cops, asked his companion to take the wheel. However, a traffic constable in the area saw them change seats and was approaching them.
“She took the wheel and one of our constables saw that and asked them to stop. But she pressed on the accelerator instead of the brakes and raced ahead, injuring a person ahead. She then stopped some distance away from the check post,” a traffic police official informed.
The identity of the duo could not be confirmed as the police did not book a case. The injured had compromised with the duo. The Road Transport Authority (RTA) database identified the owner of the vehicle as Lingam Raju.
The driver’s Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) level was, however, within permissible limits. “We checked both for drunken driving. The woman was not drunk and the man’s BAC was only 24 so he would have passed without problem,” the traffic police official said.
