The 12.5 tonnes of anode slime was meticulously replaced with the smelter slag without tampering with the Central excise seal that it crossed several checks to reach the Dubai company.
According to Tirunelveli range DIG Sumit Sharan, Mahendra Karthick (23) worked in the logistics department of Sterlite along with R. Murali Sankar (26), the container lorry supervisor, and M. Venkatesh (33) of Thoothukudi. They were approached by Moideen Kadher, a stranger to them, to execute the theft of the precious consignment.

Muthukumar (28) with money and diverted the anode slime-loaded container trucks to a private godown at Aathi Parasakthinagar, where they changed the original cargo with smelter slag on March 19, 2013. The culprits removed the doors of the containers without tampering the excise seal. They loaded the slag of same weight.
The fake consignment passed customs check at Thoothukudi port, Colombo port and Jebel Ali port, Dubai. But the culprits’ luck ran out when Fujairah Gold, the processing plant where gold, silver, platinum and palladium are extracted from the anode slime sent by Sterlite, found on April 4 that it was only slag.
Based on information from Fujairah Gold, Sterlite lodged a complaint with the Thoothukudi district SP, who referred the complaint to the district crime branch on April 12. The culprits were nabbed Saturday.
