Bengaluru: His mother had died of dengue three years ago when he was just a year old. The father married a widow hoping that she will take care of his three children. But fate had other sinister plans for the toddler when his stepmother allegedly tried to kill him by poisoning.
The victim, who is now four-years-old, has been in and out of four hospitals and is currently undergoing treatment at St Martha’s Hospital on Nrupathunga Road. The victim’s aunt Sabiha Taj, a resident of Kogilu Layout, has reported the matter to the police accusing Umma Asma of attempting to kill four-year-old Abdul Ajiz by poisoning him. Police are on the lookout for the suspect.
Sabiha’s younger sister Zabin Taj was married to Abdul Hafeez alias Mohammed Ajiz about 10 years ago. Zabin had three children - Sumera Thasin (9), Asmiya (7) and Abdul Azeez (4) and died of dengue three years ago. After her death, Abdul Hafeez married a widow, Umma Asma, a police officer investigating the case, said.
Umma had two sons from her first marriage. Hafeez, along with Sumera, Asmiya and Abdul Azeez, stayed with Umma along with her two sons in a rented house in Rashad Nagar. Zabin Taj’s three children were regularly visiting their aunt Sabiha and were complaining about the ill-treatment meted out by their stepmother. But Sabiha, the older sister of Zabin Taj, never believed the children’s allegations, the officer said.
On December 15, Abdul Azeez started vomiting blood. His father brought the child to the residence of Sabiha’s another younger sister at Saraipalya and told her that Azeez was vomiting continuously after his stepmother made him drink some medicine. Sabiha, who rushed to her sister’s house, immediately shifted the boy to Ambedkar Hospital. After undergoing treatment till December 27, the boy was shifted to M.S. Ramaiah Hospital and from there to Indira Gandhi Children’s Hospital.  The boy was brought back home on advice of doctors at the Indira Gandhi Children’s Hospital. But, when his condition deteriorated again, the boy was admitted to St Martha’s Hospital where he is still undergoing treatment, the officer said.
The victim, during the treatment, told his aunt that he started vomiting blood after his stepmother made him drink some medicine. The boy even pleaded with her not to send him back to his stepmother as he feared that she would kill him.
The jurisdictional Kadugondanahalli police learnt about the incident after a medico-legal case was registered by St Martha’s Hospital. Umma, who is absconding, has been charged with attempt to murder. “We are waiting for medical report to know what kind of liquid was given to the victim by his stepmother”, police added.

Aged women conned by ‘cops’
Bengaluru: Three elderly women were conned by miscreants posing as police officials in three separate incidents in the city. All the incidents were reported in the city's east division.
The modus operandi of the accused was to ‘alert’ the victims saying they had to be careful with their gold ornaments and in the process make the unsuspecting women remove their valuables.
The miscreants then fooled the women by saying they were wrapping the ornaments in a piece of paper to safeguard them. Later, the women got packets containing stones. By the time the victims realized they had been duped, it was too late.
62-year-old Jayanthi, a resident of Ulsoor was conned of her gold chain weighing 56 grams in Indiranagar police limits Thursday morning. She was going to a bank on Indiranagar 100 feet road and was approached by the accused who wore police uniform.
In another incident, 60-year-old Geetha of Harbour Road lost her chain weighing 50 grams in Bharathinagar police station limits. The victim was returning home after work when she was cheated of her chain near Lavanya junction in the morning.

Forest staff assaulted at Bandipur Tiger Reserve
A team of forest officials from Bandipur Tiger Reserve (BTR) including a woman officer were assaulted by a group of 20 men who were returning from Kerala after a pilgrimage to the Sabarimala shrine.
The incident occurred on Thursday morning on National Highway 212 which passes through the tiger reserve. The accused were returning from Kerala in a mini bus (KA 51 A 9360) and had parked the bus on a forest road under Maddur wildlife range of the reserve.
Some of the passengers alighted from the bus and entered the forest to answer nature’s call and take photographs. Noticing them, the forest officials, who were on their way to conduct the postmortem of an elephant which had died, asked the driver to move away as parking or stopping on a road in a tiger reserve is an offence.
The passengers started abusing the officials and refused to move. When the officials told them they would be booked under wildlife laws, the passengers allegedly assaulted the forest team, said sources. The passengers also sat on the highway saying they had been booked for wrong offences. Traffic on the highway was blocked for more than one hour because of this.
“When the passengers started pushing us, I ran for cover into the forest. I telephoned the police control room and they sent a team to the spot around 1 pm,” explained Ratna Prabha, the Range Forest Officer of Maddur.
The police detained 20 passengers who have been charged with assaulting forest officials. “All the 20 men hail from Ramanagara,” said a police officer.

An employee of the Animal Welfare Board on Thursday morning tipped off Commissioner S. George about the possible assembly of 400 people “recruited” by the so called Animal Special Police Force at Periyar grounds in Veppery.
The police believe that the gang, headed by Dr O.S. Bhavani Babu (78) a resident of Royapettah, might have collected over Rs 25 crore from the job aspirants. The 400 people had been asked to attend an induction course on Thursday and another 400 people are expected to come from all over the state on Friday.
Those “recruited”, said that they had paid Rs 6 lakh each to Bhavani Babu to become an SPCA animal special police inspector. Those selected as sub inspector had reportedly paid Rs 3 lakh while jawans had paid Rs 1 lakh.
When the police picked up Bhavani Babu, he claimed that he had done nothing wrong and added that he was authorised by the central government to recruit people for animal special police force. He also said he was staying in a rented house and claimed that he had once worked as the state government’s PRO.
Police enquires revealed there was no such order from the central government expect to sensitise police station officials about cruelty against animals.
Bhavani Babu had also issued appointment orders giving an impression that he was part of the government machinery. Other arrested were identified as Govindaraj, Selvadas, Armugham, Saravanan and Jayachandran. “At least three of them were in khaki uniform when the police arrested them. They seem to have made their own uniform and would wear them to impress ‘the new recruits’,” the police said.

Teen held for impersonating model on fb
Mumbai: A 14-year-old from Che-mbur landed in the pol-ice net after he created a fake Facebook accou-nt of model Anchal Sh-arma and asked money from her friends by spinning a story about having lost her valuables and cellphones.
A friend of the model, Vikram Ram, however, saw through the prank and laid a trap on Wednesday, resulting in him being caught and handed over to the police. Ms Sharma was a participant in the latest season of the reality show Bigg Boss.
The Chembur police has arrested the boy for impersonation under the Indian Penal Code, and under relevant sections of the IT Act.
“The message said she urgently needed `10,000. I, however, figured it was a prank as Anchal’s name was spe-lled incorrectly with two ‘As’,” Mr Ram said.
Police say that the boy, a student of Class 8, wanted to buy video games with the money.
Mr Ram, however, believes more persons to be involved in the prank since he is still receiving messages , asking if he met “his person”.
