‘Criminals’ prepare families to contest

“Criminals” in politics in Uttar Pradesh have not allowed the Supreme Court ruling to dampen their spirits and most of them are now preparing their wives and sons to replace them in politics.

Aware of the hurdles they could face in the coming days if they get convicted in any of the cases pending against them, these leaders with criminal antecedents do not want to be caught on the wrong foot.
Former BSP minister Babu Singh Kushwaha, who is in Dasna jail on charges of financial irregularities in the NRHM scam and the LACFED scam, has already made his wife Shivkanya Kushwaha and brother Shiv Charan Kushwaha join the Samajwadi Party. If sources are to be believed, Shivkanya Kushwaha will contest the Lok Sabha elections as SP candidate from Ghazipur while brother Shiv Charan Kushwaha will be a candidate in the next Assembly polls.
Babu Singh Kushwaha is not likely to be out of jail in near future and may not be able to contest elections.
Another criminal-turned-politician who has been in jail since 2005 and has been contesting elections from behind the bars is Mukhtar Ansari.
This time, the don-turned politician may not be able to contest elections because of the Supreme Court verdict and sources claim that his wife is likely to contest the Mau seat as an Ekta Manch candidate.
Another BSP leader who is in jail on corruption charges is Ranganath Misra and the former minister is also ready to introduce his wife into politics if he is unable to contest.
State BSP president Ram Achal Rajbhar is also facing a host of criminal cases. He is now grooming his son Sanjay for his political innings.
Mafia don Brijesh Singh, who is presently in Tihar jail, is gearing up to field a close relative in the Lok Sabha elections. His wife, Annapurna Singh, is already a BSP MLC.
“If the BSP agrees to field Annapurna Singh in the Lok Sabha elections, we will work for her victory but if not, then Brijesh bhai will field another close relative in the polls,” said a close aide of the don. Munna Bajrangi, another mafia don in jail, had unsuccessfully contested the Assembly elections on an Apna Dal ticket. This time, the Apna Dal has refused to give him a ticket and Bajrangi is said to be ready to field his wife in the Lok Sabha elections.
SP candidate Mitrasen Yadav is also facing the heat since he has several criminal cases against his name. His son, Anand Sen Yadav, also has an “impressive” track record in crime. The father-son duo is preparing to field Anand Sen’s wife if there is a last minute glitch.
