CRPF contingent for UN Liberia mission
A contingent of 120 CRPF personnel would soon be joining the United Nations mission in Liberia, where it would provide security cover to its Prime Minister, besides training the war-torn country’s police force.
Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) chief Vikram Srivastava on Friday flagged-off the contingent that will render civil police duties in the African country. This is the sixth Indian police contingent to Liberia. Four of the earlier ones were all-women contingents. Talking about the challenging tasks of the CRPF deployed in strife torn J&K and Naxal-hit states, Mr Srivastava hoped that the Maoist problem will be “overcome” in the near future.
“The Maoist problem will be overcome in the time ahead...It will be well contained and well controlled,” he said. The CRPF has deployed almost 60,000 personnel in the Naxal affected states of the country. “With every operation you draw lessons and rectify the procedures and techniques,” Mr Srivastava said.
The CRPF chief said that the force is exercising ‘’utmost restraint’’ in Kashmir, where the paramilitary force is battling violent street protests. He said that the force has been given a new anti-riot non-lethal gear. A contingent of the Rapid Action Force (RAF) — the specialised anti-riot unit of the CRPF — has been sent to the Valley, Mr Srivastava said.
