Crucial IIM meet this week
The Indian Institutes of Management (IIM), the top management institutes in the country, may soon be going global.
The IIM directors are scheduled to meet, in the coming week to take a decision on major issues like opening of international campuses, revision of their curriculum according to global norms and more autonomy for these institutes. The meeting will be under the chaired by Union human resources development minister Kapil Sibal.
Official sources stated that the IIM directors are scheduled to meet the HRD minister on October 13 where a decision on these issues are likely.
It is believed that the proposal for the expansion of IIMs abroad, with a international outlook, has been taken as part of UPA government’s agenda for implementation of education reforms. It is understood that the strong brand equity of these premier institutes will help them in seeking partners abroad. In fact, sources stated that IIM-Bangalore has earlier submitted an ambitious plan to open a campus in Singapore. However, the proposal could not go through. If the proposal is accepted the HRD ministry is likely to give a go-ahead to the institutes to amend their MoU if they want to open campuses abroad. The proposal is being discussed even as the HRD ministry continues to receive applications from foreign universities looking to establish their campuses in the country.
Sources stated the proposal for the IIM curriculum revamp is likely to come up as it is believed that these institutes need to expand and modernise their syllabus.
