Curfew clamped in parts of Srinagar
Curfew was clamped in parts of Srinagar in the wee hours on Tuesday as violence erupted on Monday night after security forces allegedly opened fire on a stone-pelting mob. Curfew was clamped in eight police station areas — Rainawari, Maharajgunj, Safakadal, Khanyar and Nowhatta in old city, and Maisuma, Batamaloo and Kralkhud in civil lines — in view of the violent protests and stone pelting incidents in many parts of the city on Monday night, police sources said. Earlier, District Magistrate Srinagar Mehraj Ahmad Kakroo told PTI that restrictions on the movement of the people had been imposed across the city. "We are monitoring the situation and will take a decision as per the requirements of the situation," Kakroo said. The sources said that hundreds of youth poured on the streets of Nowhatta in down city soon after the Taraweeh prayers, special night prayers offered in the fasting month of Ramadhan, and started pelting stones at the local police station. Police fired several rounds of tear smoke shells to disperse the protesters but in vain. They finally fired aerial shots to chase away the mob, who had surrounded the police station, the sources said, adding no one was hurt in the incident. Similar protests were also held in Rajouri Kadal, Karan Nagar and some other areas in the old city and Rawalpora and Maisuma areas in the civil lines. One person was injured in police action against protesters at Karan Nagar, the sources said. The injured has been admitted at Bone and Joint Hospital for treatment. Motorcycle-borne youth were seen travelling around the city raising slogans. At many places, miscreants were blocking the entry to the narrow lanes and by lanes in the city, an indication of preparation for violent protests, they said. Monday night protests erupted in the city over the fresh killings at Palhalan in Pattan area of Baramulla district. Four persons were killed and 12 others injured when security forces allegedly opened fire on a stone-pelting mob that had attacked inspector general of police SM Sahai's convoy in Pattan area. Police have initiated an enquiry into the incident. "Senior police officers have taken a serious view of the firing incident and an enquiry has been initiated. Ammunition of the policemen is being checked to fix responsibility," a police spokesman said, adding those found involved shall face action as per the law.
