Curfew lifted in most areas of Valley
Though curfew has been lifted officially in most areas of Kashmir Valley, the security forces continued to enforce a security lockdown on parts of Srinagar, Sopore and Pulwama whereas no relaxation was allowed in Kakapora township in south of Valley.
However, a semblance of normalcy appeared to have returned to the streets of the summer capital Srinagar after a night that passed off without any major incident except in Maisuma which continued to be tense and stray incidents of stone-throwing reported from the congested locality. Also, groups of youth hurled rocks at policemen in central Srinagar area of Nowhatta and its neighbourhood.
Though private cars and some autorickshaws were seen plying on the roads, public transport services remained suspended for the seventh day-straight. Hurriyat Conference (Geelani) had earlier called for a two-day shutdown in the Valley from Sunday — firstly, to mourn and protest the recent killings and the secondly to show solidarity with the prisoners and other detainees.
Curfew was lifted from most cities and towns from July 9 night to enable people to join congregational prayers on Muslim festival of Meraj al–Aalam. Officials said that prohibitory orders under Section 144 CrPC were being enforced in some areas as a preventive measure to hold back fresh protests the separatist groups may try to organise.
Meanwhile, Srinagar newspapers have decided to resume publications after suspending the operation for three days in protest against the alleged official curbs and attacks on some reporters and photojournalists by the police and CRPF men. The decision follows a meeting between the CM’s principal secretary Mr Khurshid Ahmed Ganai with the representatives of media associations in which all issues were resolved amicably.
