Curfew in parts of Srinagar

Parts of Srinagar remained under curfew on Friday to thwart a freedom march called by influential separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani.
Also, the city, mainly its old part, was gripped by renewed tensions following chief Muslim cleric and leader of his faction of Hurriyat Conference Mirwaiz Umar Farooq was assaulted by a group of Kashmiri Pandit expatriates and right-wing Hindu activists owing allegiance to Sangh Pariwar.
Mr Geelani, who has been placed under house arrest here, had asked people to march towards Srinagar’s Idgah prayer grounds with a brick each so that a “wall of resistance” could be raised besides the “martyrs’ cemetery” there.

Varsity to launch art piece probe
AGE CORRESPONDENT
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM

Nov. 26: The Cochin University of Science and Technology on Friday ordered a probe into the cutting off of the breasts of the famous grass mermaid reclining at the campus garden.
The registrar of the varsity had reportedly ordered the “breast removal” the other day following complaints from a women’s welfare association that the 20-foot long grass sculpture was vulgar and spoilt the academic ambience.
Artists have raised hell over this surgery performed on the mermaid terming it an act of Talibanism.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
