CVC discovers more overspending cases
New Delhi, Aug. 10: The Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) has submitted their preliminary findings on financial irregularities in various Commonwealth Games related projects to the CBI. A senior CVC official on Tuesday confirmed that a detailed report on their initial findings was given to the CBI on Monday while the further research of the commission is still going on.
However, sources in the CVC pointed out that the CBI will officially take on the investigation on CWG projects after the Games. Earlier in the week, a CVC official pointed out that the CBI probe is expected to begin in the first week of November.
The CVC will also be checking more CWG projects to see if quality has been compromised or other irregularities have been resorted to while completing the projects.
CVC officials have found alleged financial irregularities and other modes of corruption in at least 16 cases pertaining to the CWG. The commission added that according to their findings, officials of the Commonwealth Games committee, Delhi government and other civic agencies might be deeply involved in these cases.
The CVC has asked the Organising Committee of the CWG and the Union sports ministry to explain and justify the reasons for spending a whopping Rs 961 crore for renovation of Jawahar Lal Nehru Stadium.
The CVC has asked for a detailed report to be submitted by them in this regard. Questions have already been raised in Parliament over such a huge spending on renovation of a stadium when several new “state-of-the-art” stadia have been constructed at much lesser costs. The CVC, in its letter sent after the technical inspection, said that the cost was way too high for a “renovation project”.
