CVC nails PWD on lapses in Games
The Central Vigilance Commission in its latest report has nailed the PWD of the Delhi government for alleged financial and managerial lapses. The Chief Technical Examination report, which will be shared with the CBI, had alleged that the PWD of higher rates, poor quality control and substandard material worth `1,315.66 crore in the PWD projects of the Commonwealth Games. According to the report, there are deficiencies in 26 works worth `3,316.58 crore which were carried out by the Central and Delhi governments’ civic and construction agencies. The report points out to irregularities in works costing `364.11 crores carried out by the MCD, three valuing `221.22 crores by NDMC and two each worth `379.93 crores and `105.80 crores respectively by CPWD and ITDC.
The CVC has also found serious irregularities in two projects worth `193.16 crores implemented by the DDA and one valuing `18.37 crores by Rites, a Government of India enterprise. The new report further blamed the Suresh Kalmadi-led Games Organising Committee for “wrongfully moulding eligibility criteria” in tenders to pave the way for certain private firms to help them make profit out of the projects worth `718.33 crore on ticketing, accreditation, etc.
