CWG mess: SC takes umbrage
With the Commonwealth Games organising committee and the Delhi government trying hard to salvage the situation following the delay in completing Games projects, the Supreme Court Wednesday took umbrage over the organisers “denting” the nation’s image.
Citing the collapse of the footbridge at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium as the worst example of their “failure”, a bench comprising Justices G.S. Singhvi and A.K. Ganguly took serious note of the delay in completing projects amid serious corruption charges.
“In this country, payments are made without work being done. The newly-constructed bridge collapsed like a pack of cards. `70,000 crores are said to be involved... there are charges of rampant corruption. We cannot shut our eyes,” the bench observed, expressing the fear that everything would be swept under the carpet once the Games got over.
