CWG a proud moment for India: PM

Amid uproar over corruption in the Commonwealth Games, the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, on Sunday said the October mega event will be a "success" and it will be a "proud moment for the whole country".

"The Commonwealth Games will start in Delhi after about one and a half months. This will be a proud moment for the whole country and especially for Delhi," he said in his Independence Day speech.

"I am convinced that all our countrymen will treat the Games as a national festival and will leave no stone unturned to make them a success. The successful organisation of Commonwealth Games would be another signal to the world that India is rapidly marching ahead with confidence," he added.

The Games are slated for October 3-14.

On Saturday, the Prime Minister made it clear that the facilities for the Games should be made ready in time and meet international standards as the "eyes of the world" were on the country.

His intervention followed controversies over the event's preparations as well as the slow pace of infrastructure improvement in the national capital.
