CWG scam: CBI to register fresh FIRs
The CBI is all set to register fresh FIR in connection with alleged irregularities committed in purchase of surface tracks for different stadiums for the Commonwealth Games. The FIR may be registered by next week.
According to sources, the CBI has collected documents related to the contracts awarded to some companies for the playing surface tracks in different stadia in Delhi for the Games.
Sources further said, “The agency is looking into who cleared the specifications for the playing surface tracks and the circumstances under which specific companies were awarded the contracts for supplying the same. The agency is also planning to question the chiefs of different sports federations in this regard”. Some of the federation heads are members of the Organising Committee (OC) of the CWG, sources said, adding that the agency is also likely to make arrests immediately after registering the FIR.
The reports about some ineligible companies being awarded the contracts for supply the playing tracks because of alleged vested interests of certain federation heads is also being probed, sources said.
The CBI may register another FIR in connection with alleged irregularities in ticket sales. According to sources, initial probe by the agency into the alleged irregularities in ticketing has revealed that certain members of the OC had information about the complementary tickets being sold in the black market or distributed among people close to them. There were a total of 4.5 lakh complementary tickets printed for specific spectators, including government officials and also sponsors.
Besides, the agency is also expected to register more FIRs related to sponsorship contracts to an Australian firm. The agency is scrutinising the details of the payments made to an Australian firm, Sports Marketing And Management (SMAM), by the OC for the sponsorship. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) is also probing the share-holding pattern of a subsidiary of SMAM, which had bagged the CWG contract for getting sponsorship for the Games, sources said. The probe agencies have detected certain irregularities in connection with the contract signed with SMAM as well as further monetary transaction with Australian firm.
