Cyber-literate state alert on crime too
The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) report on Crimes in India-2011 says Kerala ranks top in the list for posting obscene articles or photos on the internet. Statistics hints that God’s Own Country could be the porn capital of India.
However, according to cyber experts, the NCRB statistics are based on the number of cases registered by the people here and not on the basis of the total number of crimes committed online.
“Kerala is a cyber literate state when compared to the other states which make people file a complaint when they find things go wrong on the web world,” says Esahaque Eswaramangalam, a virtual business architect.
People know the clauses under IT Act and understand when and how a complaint can be registered under cyber law, the experts point out. “Cyber crimes may be on the upper side in North Indian states but complaints are not being registered there because people are cyber illiterate.
Also, the people there, who compile such statistics, are envious of Kerala’s God’s Own Country’ status and they never miss out on putting a red ink on Kerala’s image,” he said.
Also, N. Vinayakumar, assistant commissioner of state high tech cell, says the state is topping the cyber crime list only because we have registered more cases here. “In the North, people are scared of even going to a police station to register a complaint. Things are different here and so more cases are being registered.”
