Cyclone Nilam leaves 3 dead
As cyclone Nilam made landfall near Mahabalipuram in Tamil Nadu on Wednesday evening, heavy rains and gale-force winds hit several coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh, killing at least three people.
Two fishermen were also reported missing at the Pulicat Lake in Nellore, which bore the impact of the cyclone due to its proximity to the landfall point. The neighbouring Chittoor district, meanwhile, received the highest rainfall.
While two persons were electrocuted in separate incidents, an old woman died in Nellore district due to the sudden drop in temperatures.
Thousands were evacuated to safer places while paddy nurseries were inundated in several areas.
Meanwhile, tidal waves rose to 12 feet and water surged 100 metre inland near Isukapalli in Nellore district.
The temple town of Srikalahasti in Chittoor district received a high rainfall of 11.5 cm.
