Cyclone Thane intensifies over TN
With Cyclone Thane set to cross Puducherry coast on Friday morning, weathermen predict heavy rain in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry for the next two days.
However, the storm surge is expected to be around 1 km in height and not cause much damage.
“The very severe cyclone storm has moved westwards and is within 180 km of Puducherry and the south coast of Chennai. It will cross between Nagapattinam and Chennai, close to Puducherry on Friday morning,” said Dr. Y.E.A. Raj, deputy director general of Meteorology, Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC).
The coastal areas would receive winds to the extent of 120 kmph, but the storm would weaken slightly before crossing, he said.
“We can expect damages due to heavy rain, but nothing major would happen due to the low storm surge,” he added.
However, Raj cautioned that squall winds are expected from Thursday night, with the storm approaching the coast at 130 kmph.
The automatic weather station at Nungambakkam recorded 15 mm rains on Thursday, while Ennore automatic weather station registered 35 mm rainfall.
Rainfall would be intense at an average of more than 25 cm over North Tamil Nadu and Puducherry for the next two days, while storms of 135 kmph would prevail over the area.
“With extensive damage expected to thatched roofs of huts and minor damage to power and communication lines by uprooting of large avenue trees and flooding of escape routes, we have requested for total suspension of fishing operations and shifting of hutment dwellers to safer places,” said RMC Area Cyclone Warning Centre, director Dr S.R. Ramanan.
