Dad slashes throat of B.E. student

Sundaramoorthy, a 50-year-old farmer from Valayamadevi near Chidambaram, slashed the neck of his daughter Gnanavalli, 21, with a sickle in full public view Monday morning after she insisted on marrying against his wishes.

The final-year civil engineering student of Annamalai University is undergoing treatment at Rajah Muthiah Medical College Hospital in Chidambaram. She is reported to be critical.

Police sources said Sundaramoorthy was strongly opposed to Gnanavalli’s love affair with classmate Bhara-thidasan, 23, and had arranged her marriage.

He attacked Gnana-valli near the university hostel as she was walking to her classroom.
