The Dalai Lama presents a scarf to Sister Prema, superior-general of the Missionaries of Charity, as West Bengal governor M.K. Narayanan looks on during the birth centenary celebrations of Mother Teresa in Kolkata on Thursday. Mr Narayanan shared the stage with the Dalai Lama, ignoring China’s objections to the governor and chief minister attending the programme. Chief minister Mamata Banerjee did not, however, attend, but Trinamul MP Derek O’Brien said “the only reason” for her absence was that her mother was critically ill. — ABHIJIT MUKHERJEE
