Day 1: Basic breakfast for Kani
The 2G scam accused, DMK MP Kanimozhi, on Saturday woke up to reality in a 15 ft by 10 ft cell of Tihar Jail. Jail officials said she woke up at 5.30 am, had morning tea and breakfast after a roll call with fellow inmates and then went out for a walk with a constable provided for her security on the prison premises.
Around 7.30 am, Kanimozhi read some English and Tamil daily newspapers, the jail officials said, adding that she left in a Tihar Jail van at 9.15 am to be produced before a special court in connection with the scam. Kanimozhi’s mother, Rajathi Ammal on Saturday gave a pensive look with moist eyes as she was brought for document scrutiny. However, Kanimozhi, soon after entering the court, hugged her mother to console her. DMK MPs T.R. Baalu, T.K.S. Elangovan, Tiruchi Siva, Adi Shankara, Helen Davidson and Jeyadurai were also present in the court.
After Kanimozhi was denied bail, she was taken back to the Tihar premises around 4 pm. Kanimozhi had her lunch with her mother at the court premises. “A few DMK MPs and her husband G. Aravinthan came to meet Kanimozhi at Tihar after she came back from the court,” said a jail official. However, the jail officials denied to reveal names of the MPs who visited Kanimozhi.
Talking to this correspondent, Tihar jail law officer Sunil Gupta said, “After returning from the court and meeting the visitors, she read a book for a while in Tihar’s jail number six ward where there are 20 inmates in 15 rooms.” Kanimozhi’s neighbours in the ward are Madhuri Gupta, the junior Indian diplomatic official who was arrested on charges of spying for Pakistan’s intelligence agency, and alleged pimp Sonu Punjaban. The jail official added, “Kanimozhi had complained about mosquitoes and asked for a mosquito repellent which was provided to her yesterday.” The officials said, “She chatted with some inmates yesterday. Today she kept to herself.”
“Kanimozhi will not be allowed to interact with the other accused in the 2G spectrum scam, including former communications minister A. Raja and Kalaignar TV chief Sharad Kumar,” the jail’s law officer said, adding that Kanimozhi had so far not asked to meet the 2G scam accused who are lodged in the jail.
The officer said, “She is not being given any special treatment and is being treated like any other inmate. She is not throwing any tantrums and cooperating with the jail authorities.”
