Day 10 of tangle: Parliament still paralysed over JPC call

With the fight over demand for setting up a JPC to go into 2G spectrum allocation remaining unresolved, Parliament failed to function for the tenth working day today with the Opposition sticking to its stand and the government refusing to relent.

Like previous days, both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha were adjourned first till noon and then for the day in the wake of pandemonium. In the Lok Sabha, Samajwadi Party members trooped into the well demanding a Joint Parliamentary Committee to probe the 2G spectrum allocation.

They were joined by members from BJP, AIADMK, Shiv Sena and TDP in vociferously demanding the Parliamentary probe.

The SP members earlier staged a sit-in before the statue of Mahatma Gandhi in the Parliament House precincts, raised slogans like 'kendra sarkar hosh mein aao, JPC banao' and marched to the House led by party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav. Congress members were seen raising placards, standing in the aisles, seeking ouster of Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yedyurappa on charges of land scam.

'Corruption, anarchy, mining mafia wins in Karnataka' and 'Corrupt CM wins, Karnataka loses' read some placards. A Congress member was also seen raising a placard seeking resignation of Orissa Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik over the Vedanta mining project.

In view of unruly scenes, Speaker Meira Kumar adjourned the House for an hour till noon. When it reassembled, similar scenes were repeated and the House was adjourned for the day after papers were laid.

The scene was no different in Rajya Sabha where opposition members did not allow the proceedings and shouted slogans in support of their demand for JPC. In the Upper House, some Congress members carried placards which read 'BJP -- Master of Hypocrisy. Why double standards on Yeddyurappa".

Rajya Sabha was initially adjourned for an hour almost immediately after they met for the day and later for the day. With continued disruption of the House, the Question Hour has been given a go by.

The Question Hour was taken up in the Lok Sabha only on November 9, the first day of the Winter Session. Since November 10, Parliament has not transacted any significant business and both Houses have been witnessing adjournments barely minutes after meeting.
