DC debate: If the sun films wil protect the lives
Sun films off 75,800 vehicles
Chennai traffic police
City traffic police, since the Supreme Court order on sun control film on vehicles came into effect in May 2012, has so far, removed sun films from 75,800 vehicles.
“We have nothing to say on the apex court order of removing sun films from the windows of vehicles. We are simply implementing a Supreme Court order,” a senior city police officer noted.
The apex court order issued by a three-member bench, specifically says that no sun control film should be stuck on the windows of vehicles.
The court wanted to do away with sunscreens because of some incidents of alleged abduction and molestation of women in vehicles with dark films on windows in some north Indian cities.
Police noted that many celebrities and women find it difficult to drive their cars without sunscreens in a tropical city like Chennai. If people find it difficult to travel in their vehicles without sun control film, they should appeal in the Supreme Court, for remedy police said.
Police has intensified the drive against sun control film in the last three days and has been stripping off screens from at least 2,500 vehicles daily. Some of the vehicle owners had themselves removed the black films.
Tinted windows offer protection

The police cannot be blamed for the ongoing drive as they are only implementing the Supreme Court’s verdict on sun films. The verdict came after the infamous Delhi rape case and we cannot take sides on this court ruling as it has both pros and cons.
The police have now intensified action against vehicle owners who have not removed the sun film on their windows. In fact, even buses have not been spared. The law enforcers should first initiate action against manufacturers of sun films and the traders involved in selling these banned items. And such a drive has to be taken across the country.
The truth though, is that during most part of the year Chennaiites reel under severely hot conditions. The sun film protects vehicle owners from the heat wave.
Further, vehicle owners face the risk of losing valuables from their vehicles when the windshield and mirrors are transparent. Motorists opine that air-conditioned vehicles with tinted glass are efficient and consume less fuel.
But on the other hand, with a number of women drivers out on the road, there are these ‘roadside Romeos’ teasing them, latching on when they find a vehicle with transparent windows.
