Deafening noise from sea causes scare

Rameswaram: A deafening noise from the sea off a village in Nagapattinam district caused a flutter among residents last nightfollowing which Naval and Coast Guard ships from here have been rushed to the spot.

People of Pushavanam Village near Vedaranyam, about 280 km from here, heard the loud noise late this evening, but did not see any light or splash in the sea, Marine Police and Coast Guard officials here said.

They told PTI that a coastguard vessel and a Naval ship had been rushed to the spot to ascertain the cause of the noise.

"It is not known what caused the deafening noise, whether it occurred naturally or due to some explosion. We will know the reason only after the team inspects the spot," Assistant Director of Fisheries, Mohan said.
