Dec. 16: Death sought for all
A special fast-track Delhi court on Wednesday reserved its order on the quantum of punishment for four convicts in the brutal December 16 gangrape case till Friday. The prosecution argued that the guilty men “deserved capital punishment” for their “diabolical” crime, while the defence pleaded for leniency.
Additional sessions judge Yogesh Khanna reserved his order on sentencing till Friday afternoon. The four — Mukesh, 26; Vinay Shar-ma, 20; Pawan Gupta, 19; and Akshay Thakur, 28 — were held guilty Tuesday for the “cold-blooded” murder and gangrape of a 23-year-old paramedical student in South Delhi. Mukesh’s counsel moved an application for a contempt notice to home minister Sushilkumar Shinde for his remark that death was “assured” for the four convicts.
