Delhi cops play it ‘cool’with Anna supporters
The Delhi police has asked its force to keep a “low profile” while dealing with the protest marches called by the social activist Anna Hazare to avoid any disturbance to the peace in the city. This was apparent on Sunday afternoon when a large crowd marched from India Gate towards the residence of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Race Course Road and the police merely whisked the protesters away.
Senior police officials said a large crowd comprising of men, women and youngsters, shouting slogans against corruption and demanding the introduction of Jan Lokpal Bill in Parliament, marched from India Gate towards the PM’s residence. As they arrived close to 7 RCR, the protesters, many carrying flowers, indulged in sloganeering and some of them demanded the resignation of Mr Singh.
However, the police control room was immediately informed by the security personnel guarding the PM’s residence and the march was brought to a halt just 200 metres away from the residence. “No detentions were made and no action was taken,” Delhi police spokesperson Rajan Bhagat said.
A large number of Team Anna’s supporters are seen moving around in city these days with many of them hitting the roads on bikes without wearing helmets, waving the tricolour and shouting slogans. On Saturday evening, some of the protesters even took Metro trains to raise awareness about the Gandhian activist’s movement.
