Speeding up its work, Delhi Metro plans to award all 21 civil contracts of the ambitious Phase-III project within the next three to four months to ensure that corridors are completed on schedule by 2016.

The Phase-III could see the debut of aluminium coaches, which are commonly used in Metro networks abroad, with the Delhi Metro deciding to give the option for such cars as and when the tenders for rolling stock are floated.

Out of the 21 contracts, three have been awarded to various agencies, four are being floated and others would be out in the next three-four months, Delhi Metro managing drector E. Sreedharan said. "I am expecting that in the next three-four months civil activity will start in all the tenders," he told PTI.

He also said since Delhi Metro will be able to run trains at an increased frequency of 90 seconds in the Phase-III corridors, all lines would have only six-coach trains.

Work on the Central Secretariat-Mandi House and Jahangirpuri-Badli corridor have already started and these lines would be commissioned within the next three years.

Delhi Metro's Phase-III envisages bringing another 103 km of the national capital on the Metro network at an estimated cost of Rs 35,242 crore.

Sreedharan said Delhi Metro would keep floating three to four tenders every week and award them after due process.

The Phase-III, which will be completed by 2016, will have a total of 67 stations with 15 inter-change points that will facilitate free movement of commuters.

The corridors on the Phase-III are -- Mukundpur to Yamuna Vihar, Janakpuri West to Kalinidikunj, Central Secretariat to Kashmere Gate and Jahangirpuri-Badli. Sreedharan said Delhi Metro will try aluminium coaches in Phase-III.

"We are giving an option for aluminium coaches. If aluminum is going to be cheaper then we have to go for alumnium," he said.
