Depressed over obesity, 24-yr-old commits suicide

In a tragic incident, a 24-year-old woman of New Sidhapudur committed suicide at her residence as she was depressed over being obese.
Police said D. Karthika, a ME graduate, who was working as a lecturer in a private engineering college near Pollachi, hanged from the fan using a dupatta on Wednesday.
Karthika was always worried that she was too fat for her age. “ In an desperate effort to lose weight, she usually skipped her breakfast and dinner at home and took just small amount of food for lunch.
Over a period of time, Karthika turned so weak that she sometimes even fell down after feeling dizzy due to hunger,” police said.
Despite her strict diet, Karthika did not lose weight. “Out of frustration, Karthika ended her life while her mother Saraswathi was not at home,” police said.
The incident came to light when some of Karthika’s friends came to her residence. The doors were locked from inside and the victim too did not respond to the phone calls. When friends and neighbours broke open the doors they found Karthika dead.
The Race Course police rushed to the scene and retrieved a suicide note written by the victim. The note said that it was her decision to commit suicide and no one was responsible, police said. Karthika is the only daughter of Saraswathi, who brought her up all alone.
