Deshmukh to meet MPs on land bill
The government has said that it will carefully look at all suggestions that are being made with regard to the new land acquisition bill which is currently being drafted.
In addition, the suggestions made by the Sonia Gandhi-led National Advisory Council (NAC) too will be examined.
Giving this reassurance in the capital on Thursday, Union minister for rural development, Vilasrao Deshmukh also reiterated the government’s intention of bringing in the new land acquisition bill in the Monsoon Session of Parliament.
“The Cabinet note on the proposed bill will be prepared after the ministry receives suggestions from all the stakeholders,” Mr Deshmukh said adding, “Whatever policy is made on land acquisition it would be in the benefit of the farmers only.”
As for the NAC’s recommendations on the need to integrate the Land Acquisition (Amendment) Bill and the Resettlement and Rehabilitation Bill into one law, Mr Deshmukh said that his ministry will “certainly examine whatever suggestions have been made by the NAC”.
Mr Deshmukh is slated to meet several Lok Sabha MPs and various other stakeholders on Friday to ascertain their views on the issue.
Senior officials said that all those who had written to the ministry with their suggestions on an amendment bill on land acquisition have been invited for a meeting with the Union minister on Friday.
When asked on the proposed Land Acquisition (Amendment) Bill, Mr Deshmukh told reporters that the ministry is in the process of discussion and some of the Lok Sabha MPs of different parties will be meeting him on Friday.
