Dhaka to confiscate Ulfa chief’s assets
Elusive Ulfa chief Paresh Baruah and his business associates are in serious trouble with Bangladesh asking its investigative agencies to confiscate their investments in that country.
Disclosing that Tarique Rahman, son of key Opposition leader Khaleda Zia, has been identified as one of the Ulfa chief’s business associates, security sources told this newspaper that the agencies had been told to take action against all those handling the Ulfa chief’s huge investments in Bangladesh.
A “red corner” notice has also been issued by the Bangladesh government to apprehend the Ulfa leader, the sources said, adding that efforts are on to identify Baruah’s bank accounts and properties, which may be held under different names and identities. An Indian “red corner” notice is also out against him.
The objective is twofold: to expose Tarique Rahman’s nexus with Indian insurgent groups and also to choke the flow of Bangladeshi funds to the Ulfa chief.
The security sources confirmed that Baruah was again shuttling between Burma and frontier areas of China, and that his position in Burma was secure with NSCN(K) chief S.S. Khaplang offering support.
