Dia mirza pays `1.25 lakh fine for duty evasion
Actress Dia Mirza is the latest in the string of Bollywood celebrities to be penalised by the customs department. She was stopped at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport and fined for not declaring goods early on Saturday morning.
According to customs officials, Ms Mirza was returning from Bangkok by a Thai Airways flight and was passing through the green channel, which is used by fliers with no dutiable goods to declare. However, customs officials searched her and she was found to be in possession of cosmetics, accessories and handbags worth over `2 lakh.
“Ms Mirza claimed that she was not aware that the goods were dutiable. She then paid the fine as well as the duty levied on the goods, `1.25 lakh in all, and was subsequently allowed to leave,” said Sameer Wankhede, deputy commissioner, customs.
