Didi may meet PC today on package
West Bengal chief minister and Trinamul Congress chief Mamata Banerjee may meet finance minister P. Chidambaram on Thursday to discuss the issue of financial package for her state.
Ms Banerjee is said to have raised the issue of financial package for West Bengal in the second UPA coordination committee meeting on Wednesday, which was chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
Sources said the West Bengal chief minister has not relented from her position on the issue of allowing FDI in multi-brand retail. “The issue of FDI in multi-brand retail was discussed but Ms Banerjee reiterated the party stand that it was not in the interest of the country. The party has already taken a stand that it would oppose FDI in multi-brand retail even if it was made optional for the states. There is no change in our stand,” sources within the TMC stated. Ms Banerjee is also learnt to have expressed her unhappiness at the poor state of National Highways in West Bengal.
Ms Banerjee is learnt to have asked Mr Chidambaram if she could meet him on Thursday to discuss the issue of financial package for West Bengal to which the finance minister is said to have replied in the positive. “Ms Banerjee may meet the finance minister on Thursday as she would be in the capital,” added the sources. After the UPA coordination meeting, Ms Banerjee went to Rashtrapati Bhavan to have dinner with President Pranab Mukherjee, who would be visiting IIT-Kharagpur later this month to take part in a function, which would also be his first visit to West Bengal after becoming the President.
While the demands of West Bengal for moratorium on interest payments and restructuring of debt were put on the backburner after Ms Banerjee’s flip-flop on supporting the UPA candidate for the presidential elections, the TMC sources said that the chief minister is again pursuing the case with the Centre.
