Diggy: Can’t delay T-decision any more
A day after Union home minister Sushilkumar Shinde asserted that a decision on Telangana couldn’t be expected immediately, senior Congress leader Digvijay Singh on Thursday said that the party’s core group will discuss the matter on Friday as a decision “cannot be postponed anymore”.
Mr Singh also said as the matter requires a constitutional amendment, both the UPA partners and the Opposition need to be taken on board. Even as his remarks led to speculation that the Congress may support a separate Telangana state, he preferred to be non-committal saying, “I cannot say anything on this. This has to be decided by the government of India in consultation with the UPA partners. As this will also need amendment to the Constitution, we may have to take Opposition parties also on board.”
The general secretary in-charge of Andhra Pradesh, who had submitted his report on the issue to Congress president Sonia Gandhi, refused to reveal the contents of it.
When asked if the creation of Rayal Telangana was being considered, he said, “I have asked the chief minister, PCC chief and the deputy CM to prepare a roadmap of political strategy leading to the 2014 Assembly and Lok Sabha elections keeping both options open. They are going to give a presentation before the core committee on July 12 and on basis of that the government of India would take a decision, which would then become our responsibility to implement. There are pros and cons of both the issues. Ultimately, government of India has to take a view.” To persistent queries on his party’s commitment to the creation of Telangana, Mr Singh said, “If you see the manifesto, we had promised Second State Reorganisation Commission.”
