Digvijay: I stand by what I said
AICC general secretary Digvijay Singh on Thursday said Mr P. Chidambaram is a very competent home minister. “The Prime Minister has reposed confidence in him to lead the ministry which I think is right,” he said. He also welcomed the AICC’s directives to the partymen.
Answering to a volley of questions on Mr Chidambaram’s interview published in a leading English newspaper on Thursday and his response to it, Mr Singh said: “My response is nothing. The Prime minister has the right. What I think he (PM) has reposed confidence on Chidambaram to lead the ministry, which is right (sic).” Replying to a question in an interview, Mr Chidambaram had said: “I have a job to do and I am doing my job to the best of my ability. If someone can do the job better, I would be the happiest person.”
Responding to queries on whether he wants to join the Union Cabinet, Mr Singh said: “No question. I am not in the race for the home ministry. I am not an MP and do not want to become till 2014. If the party decides, I will contest the LS election in 2014. But I will not contest the Assembly elections.” Mr Singh said why should Mr Chidambaram, and not the chief minister, be held responsible for the law and order situation in Chhattisgarh. “He (Chidambaram) is a very competent minister,” he said, adding: “I stand by what I said on the Naxal issue. I have not criticised the home minister.”
