Din over UP firing stalls Houses
The police firing on agitating farmers in Uttar Pradesh protesting against forcible land acquisition rocked both Houses of Parliament on Monday, with most non-BSP parties trooping to the well to seek action against erring state officials.
Before being adjourned for the day in the afternoon, the Lok Sabha was adjourned twice in the pre-lunch session without transacting any business. In the Rajya Sabha, the uproar broke out after Question Hour, leading to two quick adjournments.
BJP, SP, RLD, Shiv Sena and JD(U) members stormed the well of the Lok Sabha as soon as the House assembled for the day, while Congress members threatened to follow suit.
In the Rajya Sabha, BJP and BSP members clashed, with the former demanding a discussion during Question Hour on the farmers’ agitation, and the BSP strongly opposing this.
As soon as the House met, Mr Arun Jaitely said some members had given a notice for suspension of Question Hour so that the police action on agitating farmers in UP could be discussed.
