Diplomats feast on mangoes, Urdu poetry
Ambassadors of 14 countries enjoyed the famous Dussheri mango at a special mango feast hosted by the mango growers in Malihabad on Saturday night.
The initiative was a part of a programme designed to push mango exports across the globe.
The ambassadors of several nations, including Ukraine, Bulgaria, Lebanon, Algeria, Surinam and Malawi, attended the programme in Malihabad on the outskirts of Lucknow.
Mr Insaram Ali, president of the All-India Mango Growers Association, said on Sunday that the programme was designed to popularise and promote the varieties of mangoes grown in Malihabad.
“Apart from a seminar, we also served the guests the various varieties of mango and also made them taste various dishes made from mango,” he said.
Association spokesman Siraj Mehndi said that he was confident that the efforts will bear fruit and mangoes from Malihabad will, one day, reach out to these countries.
To give a feel of the rural mango pocket, the visiting diplomats were take around the mango orchards in bullock carts and were later treated to a special evening of Urdu poetry and ghazals.
Mango exports from Lucknow have failed to take off due to inadequate packaging and export facilities. The Alfonso from Maharashtra has forged ahead in exports because of packaging and export facilities from Mumbai.
