Dissidents enter civic poll fray as Independents
The Bharatiya Janata Party omitted several prominent councillors in the list of 272 candidates for the civic polls.
Several party workers from the BJP and Congress have filed their nominations independently after they were denied party tickets.
Many prominent faces of Delhi BJP, including former mayors Arti Mehra and Prithvi Raj Sawhney were not given the ticket. Prominent BJP councillors like Jagdish Mamgain and V.K. Monga were also disappointed by the party high command.
Meanwhile the Congress managed to control the disappointed party workers and senior leaders. On the last day of nomination, the Congress replaced 15 candidates. Five of them were replaced in the constituency of Congress MP Krishna Tirath.
Delhi mayor Rajni Abbi has been fielded from Mukherjee Nagar, a general seat. A total of 139 women were fielded by BJP as against over 140 by the Congress.
The BJP list also has five Muslims as candidates from Jama Masjid, Minto Road, Turkman Gate, Qasabpura (women) and Zakir Nagar wards.
The ticket distribution process was marred by protests and party workers even heckled some leaders. A senior Delhi BJP leader, a councillor who did not figure in the list, alleged favouritism.
“Gupta managed to get ticket for his wife. Many members of the election committee were freshers in the panel and did not have the experience for this job. Even Gupta got into the committee for the first time,” the leader alleged.
