Divisions in Opp. growing
Distance between the main Opposition BJP and the rest of the Opposition parties in Parliament is growing, giving enough time to the government to re-do its floor strategy and passage of the key legislative business in the Budget Session of Parliament, which will conclude on March 25.
Division in the Opposition came to the fore more than once in the Lok Sabha with non-BJP parties refusing to tow the line of the main Opposition against the government.
On Wednesday, the BJP members were seen opposing and obstructing the speech of Janata Dal(S) leader and former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda in the House. This had provoked the Samajwadi Party, RJD, CPI(M),CPI members. Mr Mulayam Singh Yadav, Mr Lalu Prasad Yadav, Mr Basudeb Acharia, Mr Gurudas Dasgupta, Mr Raghuvansh Prasad Singh and others strongly objected to the BJP’s attempts to stop Mr Deve Gowda from making the speech.
On the other hand, members of the NDA allies — Janata Dal(U), the Shironami Akali Dal and the Shiv Sena — distanced themselves from the BJP.
The BJP’s second-rung were seen commenting on some of the Opposition leaders and arguing with Speaker Meira Kumar.
Mr Deve Gowda said this House cannot be run by the Opposition leader because of the numerical strength. “We have got every right to express our grievances. This is not the way,” he said.
Outside Parliament, CPI leader D. Raja accused the BJP of adopting double standards on corruption and said the saffron party becomes “ferocious” when it comes to 2G or CWG scams, but prefers being silent on the “Yeddyurappa issue”.
“It is a known fact that the BJP pursues a double standard in its fight against corruption. Though the BJP is raising corruption issues, it takes a different stand on the Yeddyurappa issue,” he said.
The NDA insiders have virtually disapproved Leader of Oppostion Sushma Swaraj’s attempts to fix parliamentary affairs minister Pawan Kumar Bansal in the alleged booth allotment scam in Chandigarh.
