DMK chief meets Sonia, PM ahead of bail hearing

Just two days prior to her bail plea coming up for hearing in a special court, Rajya Sabha MP Kanimozhi’s father and DMK chief Karunanidhi called on Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh seeking their help in securing the release of his daughter on bail in the 2G spectrum case. Though the DMK patriarch got no guarantees from them, it is believed that he is quite satisfied with the talks. Incidentally, this is the first meeting of the DMK leader with both the Prime Minister and Mrs Gandhi after the alliance’s rout in the April assembly polls in Tamil Nadu.
Late in the evening after meeting Kanimozhi, A. Raja and Kalaignar TV MD Sharad Kumar at Tihar Jail for nearly an hour, Mr Karunanidhi and his wife met Dr Singh for 30 minutes and apparently discussed the Kudankulam nuclear controversy. T.R. Balu and minister of state in the Prime Minister’s office Mr Narayansamy was also present during the meeting.
According to sources, the DMK supremo, accompanied by his wife Rajathi Ammal and senior party leader T.R. Balu, met Mrs Gandhi at her residence for nearly half-an-hour. Though he enquired about Mrs Gandhi’s health, the entire discussion was only about Ms Kanimozhi.

‘Court framing charges a process of law’
New Delhi, Oct. 22: Congress on Saturday reacted sharply to BJP demand for a CBI probe against P. Chidambaram after a Delhi court framed charges against former telecom minister A. Raja, DMK MP Kanimozhi and 15 others in the 2G spectrum scam, describing it as “purely a process of law”.
The party also snubbed those reading a political meaning into former Tamil Nadu chief minister M. Karunanidhi’s meeting with party chief Sonia Gandhi here, saying it was wrong to link it up with 2G issue or Kanimozhi’s case.
“Today’s order is an inevitable stage in criminal justice trial. This is purely a process of law on which a political party has no need to comment...,” party spokesman Abhishek Singhvi said. — PTI
