DMK creates ruckus in Rajya Sabha

DMK members on Tuesday created pandemonium in the Rajya Sabha, with several of party members entering the well of the House, when a bill to repeal the Tamil Nadu Legislative Council Act was introduced.

The ruckus led to adjournment of the House twice and finally the Rajya Sabha was adjourned sine die without the listed business for the day being transacted.

Several DMK members trooped into the Well as soon as Union law and justice minister Salman Khurshid moved the Tamil Nadu Legislative Council (Repeal) Bill, 2012.

DMK members were protesting against the Bill which seeks to make consequential amendments in the Representation of the People Act, 1950 and the Representation of People Act, 1951 and abolish the Tamil Nadu Legislative Council.

Amid din, P.J. Kurien, who was in the Chair, adjourned the House for 10 minutes. During the ruckus AIADMK’s V. Maitreyan asked the DMK members whether they were “still a part of the cabinet or not”.

As soon as the House reassembled the DMK members again entered the well, forcing Tariq Anwar, who was in the Chair to adjourn the House till 4.30 pm.

When the House reassembled at 4.30 pm, leader of Opposition Arun Jaitley said his party had already made its apprehension clear that an ally of the government was being used to stall the statement of finance minister Pranab Mukherjee.

The finance minister was scheduled to make a statement in the House regarding the Aircel-Maxis deal.

Parliamentary affairs minister Pawan Bansal refuted this allegation and said that the issue can be taken up in next session of the House.

Soon thereafter Rajya Sabha chairperson Hamid Ansari adjourned the House sine die.
