DMK turns heat on UPA over Lanka at UNHRC

Sensing an opportunity to retrieve lost ground in Tamil Nadu, DMK has decided to raise in the coming budget session of the Parliament the demand that India support the US resolution against Sri Lanka at the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva.

DMK sources say that the party wouldn’t mind even walking out of the UPA over the issue, if push comes to a shove.

“We are closely watching how the government is going to respond to Tamil sentiments. Any wrong move will have serious consequences for the alliance”, said a DMK leader.

He went on to add that the Congress is on the backfoot after the big setback in the recent state elections and so cannot afford to brush aside the views of its allies.

Pressure from the southern ally could not have come at a worse time for Congress, already under stress over many issues with TMC in West Bengal.

The government is worried that voting against Sri Lanka could push the southern neighbour deeper into the Chinese fold.
