Don’t listen to rumours, says Mamata

Voicing concern over the mass exodus of the north-eastern people in the wake of Assam violence, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday deplored attempts to rake up trouble.
“Do not listen to rumours. Please maintain peace and harmony,” she told the huge congregation for Id namaz at the Red Road here. “We do not support this (violence). We will give all support (to Assam) in the prevailing situation.”
“Those who have taken shelter in Jalpai-guri district (of West Bengal) are our guests ... We have given them shelter. If any of them do not want to return now we will continue to provide them shelter,” she said. Ms Banerjee said her government had taken up several programmes for the uplift of the minorities since it came to power in 2011.

Gogoi: violence refugees a priority
MANOJ ANAND
Guwahati, Aug. 20

Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi here on Monday ruled out the possibility of his resignation in the wake of violence in Bodoland Territorial Council and neighbouring districts of Assam.
Referring that only the BJP was pressing for his resignation, Mr Gogoi told reporters that even after charges of instigating violence Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi did not resign.
Pointing out that BJP leaders are equating the violence of Assam with Gujarat, Mr Gogoi argued, “In Gujarat violence and killing continued for months and chief minister Narendra Modi himself was accused to have instigated the violence but here the case is different.”
He said in a same breath, “A section of people are of course accusing and criticising us for failure but no one can accuse us of instigating or patronising violence in BTC.”
In reference to education and health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma who is not attending the office, Mr Gogoi said, “For me it is not the issue. I can tell you that no work is pending in health and education departments. All files are coming to me.”

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
