Dosa, paan, sambar, mummy porn now in online dictionary
New words like amazeballs, mummy porn, paan and blootered have been included in an online version of the Collins English Dictionary, which ran a competition for new words in July-August. The dictionary opened up its word submission process to the public seeking suggestions from “anyone who wants to be part of the evolution of the English language”.
“If your word is one of them, you will be credited on the word’s definition page. If you haven’t been successful this time, don’t give up, we’re still accepting new word suggestions, and will update the site regularly,” Collins Dictionary editors said.
Accepted Indian-origin words include daal, dosa, Dravida, paan, pooja and sambar. Verbal diarrhoea, a tendency to speak at excessive length, used frequently in India, has made the list too. Abbreviations like BBM for Blackberry Messenger and Locog for London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games have been included.
Tiger mother, a very strict mother who demands her kids reach a high level of achievement; mummy porn, which is a genre of erotic fiction designed to appeal to women, are included among the new words. Popular jargon like liveblog; facetime; frenemy; cyberbully and Facebook have also been included.
