Dow Chem has to be prosecuted: Kamal Nath
Road transport and highways minister Kamal Nath on Saturday reinforced the government’s viewpoint, stating that the financial liability for the Bhopal gas tragedy must be placed firmly on Dow Chemicals.
A key member of the reconstituted Group of Ministers on the Bhopal disaster, Mr Nath said: “We will have to use every legal method available to bring Dow to book since they have purchased the assets of Union Carbide and are threfore liable for all the consequences of these assets.”
The minister was speaking at a public debate on the Bhopal disaster organised by the Madhya Pradesh Foundation. “We are petitioning the Jabalpur court for a quick judgment, but we don’t want to wait for the judgment in order to recover compensation. We want to move ahead,” the minister said. He feared “there could be more than a million tonnes of toxic waste lying in and around the disaster site. We’re sitting on a toxic volcano.”
