Drug haul puts rich kids in spot
In a breakthrough that threatens to shatter the orthodox image of Chennai, Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has intercepted a cocaine supply chain run by a Nigerian who boats a list of nearly 200 children of the city’s rich and famous.
“We arrested Chukwuemeka Damasus Chinedu, 36, from a lodge on Mount Road Saturday and will summon all his clients,” a senior NCB official told Deccan ChronicleMonday.
He said the Nigerian national was carrying 122 gm of cocaine in translucent packets of 1 gm each. He was selling atRs 3,000 a gram to his high-end clientele in Chennai for the past two years and was expanding his network steadily.
Chinedu from Lagos had been traveling in and out of India in the guise of a cloth merchant exporting T-shirts to Nigeria from Tirupur. Police said he had confessed collusion with West African drug traffickers operating in Mumbai and New Delhi.
“A majority of his clients are club- and pub-addicts hailing from industrialist, trade, business, corporate and other affluent backgrounds. He has clients in almost all star hotels of Chennai, beaches, parks, pubs, discos and eateries catering to the affluent.”
