Drunk couple caught in tussle with hotel staff

Hyderabad: Public displays of affection are still frowned upon in Hyderabad, and necking couples in Sanjeevaiah Park are often chased out by police patrols.

A couple who dared to indulge in a bit of kissing and nuzzling while lunching at a hotel in Secunderabad on Saturday, however, found themselves facing more strenuous objections. A railway official who was lunching at the same restaurant told the couple he found their ‘misbehaviour’ “ugly” and not acceptable.

Angered by this the couple, who were drunk at that time, assaulted the official and picked up a huge fight with the hotel staff.

The drunk man created a big scene at the hotel by fighting with the staff abusing them in foul language and assaulting them. The couple said they were married and questioned the moral policing. The argument continued outside the restaurant much to the amusement of passers-by and visitors to the hotel.

The police were called in. The arguments went on for more than half an hour. The straitlaced railway official then left and the police hauled up both the complainant, the staff and the couple to the police station.

After coming to the police station the drunken man began to understand the complications of a police case and did not want to file a complaint. The hotel staff too wanted a compromise. The police took a compromise letter from both parties and allowed them to leave.

In Hyderabad, dating and living together are still not widely accepted by all sections of society. Couples indulging in amorous embraces, kissing, and caressing in parks, hotels and other public places always spark a big moral debate.

Legally, a nuisance case can be booked for indecent behaviour. Traditional values, morals and the freedom of individuals are always in conflict in such cases.

I want to begin with a little story that was told to me by a leading executive at Aptech. He was exercising in a gym with a lot of younger people.

Shekhar Kapur’s Bandit Queen didn’t make the cut. Neither did Shaji Karun’s Piravi, which bagged 31 international awards.
